Graves had dealt with the loss of dogs throughout his childhood, but Blue's disappearance seemed to impact him differently. Now that blue is gone, he is afraid now to be without a dog. I think that ultimately he wasn't afraid of loving his dogs, but rather regarded loving an animal as a curiosity in human nature that he willingly participates in.

Hmm...I don't know that I agree that he was calloused. Rather, I think when viewed from a stoic point of view, he reveals a remarkably witty and reserved, yet powerful emotion for his animals, in particular Blue. The sheer number of vivid details he is able to remember about each one, from facial ticks and fur consistency, to habits and bark quality reveal how profoundly he allowed the animals to impact his world. Indeed, his remark about foolish people letting animals in reeks of sarcastic double speak, whereby the savvy reader sees that by foolish, he means to include those people in some sort of in-group. He follows the statement by saying "But if you are build to be such a fool, you are, and if the animal is to you what Blue was to me the space he leaves empty is big" (135). He isn't recommending a shut out of animals, but a broadening of their impact and depth, ending his narrative with musings about getting many more companions to love.

I just started a blog on Jude The Obscure for a literature class and am so happy I can link to your work. GREAT insight! I was guilty of despising Arabella, but you have helped me see her in a completely different light.

That video was heart wrenching. I could not bring myself to watch all of it. I will never look at a circus the same way again. Thought provoking post.
